My acting experiences have brought about my greatest growth as an artist
and a human being. I was a very open, imaginative kid and let's face it, I
had a big mouth! I was shy, but loved to perform and improvise shows in my
parents' kitchen. I participated in the drama classes at school, was always
excited to play improv games and be in a show. High school came along and
like many, I was hurt along the way, wasn't always accepted for being "just
Katie," and retreated inside myself, feeling alone and misunderstood. (Sound
familiar to anyone who survived their teenage years?)
One summer while home from college, I studied in Darryl Hickman's Acting
Workshop. He came highly recommended by my mother who had studied with
Darryl while I was in the womb! I loved this workshop, and returned to
school with a greater sense of myself and my goals as an artist. I bought
and read specific books, per Darryl's suggestion, and as soon as I landed
back in LA, I returned to the class. I've been studying with Darryl for a
few years now.

Darryl Hickman gives actors, directors and writers the tools they need to be
"unconscious" artists who skillfully create a performance based on an
intuitive flow of energy through a form. Darryl Hickman's acting process
gives a step-by-step approach to bringing yourself to each role you play
organically and creatively while creating behavior and blocking that
clearly expresses the inner life of your character and his/her relationships
and conflicts. Studying Darryl's Process has been and IS the most valuable
learning experience of my life. Not only am I learning skills to be a great
actress, but I'm also learning about myself constantly, with complete
respect and acceptance from Darryl and my fellow classmates. I can't imagine
finding a better place for me to grow as an artist and am grateful for it
every day of my life.

I've studied with many dance teachers over the years, and there are three who have influenced me the most: Dean Barlow, Michael Owens and Natasha Middleton. Natasha was my primary ballet teacher, and I began studying tap and jazz with Dean. I continued with Dean Barlow throughout high school and beyond. I began studying jazz with Michael Owens in high school and have continued, schedule-permitting, up until this day. They are all three "the best" at what they do and I would not have the dance skills I have today without these three teachers. I am grateful for having had (and having!) the opportunity to learn from them.
